However, her perspective shifted when she took her first public health class. The concept of social determinants of health resonated deeply with her, sparking a realization that healthcare extends far beyond hospitals—it is about ensuring equitable access to essential services and empowering communities to thrive.

Determined to make a greater impact, she double majored in Public Health, complementing her scientific background with a broader understanding of healthcare systems and preventative care measures. Her journey led her to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) at UNC Chapel Hill, with a concentration in Global Health, through her studies, she engaged in transformative fieldwork across the continent gaining experience in tackling healthcare disparities and strengthening community resilience.

A Commitment to Senegal and FOHSEN

Throughout her academic journey, Rokhaya remained deeply connected to her roots, seeking ways to contribute to healthcare improvement in Senegal. Her dedication to healthcare equity, from working with SOS Village to supporting children with disabilities, instilled in her a lifelong mission to uplift underserved communities. She believes in a collaborative approach that prioritizes listening to community members, understanding their needs, and equipping them with the tools to drive their own development. Her work is fueled by the belief that healthcare access should never be a privilege but a fundamental right for all.

Beyond Public Health

Outside of her professional work, Rokhaya is an avid traveler. Exploring new cultures and engaging with diverse communities has deepened her understanding of cultural humility—an essential trait in the fields of public health and medicine. Whether visiting new countries or discovering hidden gems within the U.S., she embraces each journey as an opportunity to broaden her perspective.
