At FOHSEN, we believe that real impact begins with people who know their communities best. Few embody that belief more than Sano Ngom, a Community Health Worker (CHW) whose deep sense of responsibility and compassion has made her an essential part of FOHSEN’s mission in rural Senegal.
A Commitment That Starts at Home
Sano joined FOHSEN three years ago with a clear purpose: to bring essential care closer to the people she loves. Having witnessed the effects of limited access to screenings and preventive services, she wanted to be part of the solution.
“I saw how many people lacked access to basic screenings for diabetes and hypertension,” she says. “By joining FOHSEN, I knew I could bring these vital services closer to home and help connect people to the health post more easily.”
As a CHW, Sano provides health education, conducts screenings, and supports families through every stage of care—especially those living with chronic conditions or navigating pregnancy. Her presence offers more than just information; it brings comfort, trust, and a sense of being seen.
From a Small Team to a Strong Network
When Sano first joined FOHSEN, the CHW program was just beginning. Today, she’s proud to be part of a network that has grown to include trained health workers in every village in her region.
“When I started, there were only a few of us,” she explains. “Now, every village has its own trained CHW. It’s powerful to witness that growth and know we are creating a stronger safety net for everyone.”
Her work represents the heart of FOHSEN’s model—locally rooted care that is responsive, respectful, and community-led.
Leading Through Action
Sano’s work is often quiet but deeply impactful. She is one of the first people families turn to for guidance, especially when facing chronic illnesses or pregnancy-related concerns. Her support helps reduce preventable deaths by ensuring that individuals seek care earlier and understand the risks they face.
“FOHSEN is saving lives,” she says. “Through our referral system, we’ve helped reduce mortality—especially for pregnant women who delay prenatal visits, and for adults living with diabetes and hypertension.”
Sano doesn’t just provide care—she helps people take ownership of their health, empowering them with knowledge and support.
Beyond the Job: A Personal Mission
For Sano, this work goes beyond any title or task list. It’s personal. “What I cherish most is my commitment—being deeply engaged in something that directly benefits the people I care about.”
She approaches each home visit and health screening with empathy, patience, and determination. Her relationships with her community are rooted in trust—built over time, through consistency and care.
A Message to Future Changemakers
Sano’s advice to those looking to get involved is simple but powerful: “Be ready to give your all—because this work is about more than tasks or titles. It’s about showing up for your neighbors, your parents, your friends. It’s personal, and it’s meaningful.”
As FOHSEN continues to grow, leaders like Sano remind us what true community-centered care looks like—quiet, steady, and deeply rooted in love and action.
