Renovating health facilities

FOHSEN is transforming healthcare in rural Senegal by building and renovating clinics like the Nganda Maternity Clinic, designed to reduce maternal and infant mortality. These facilities are equipped with biomedical tools like ultrasound machines and emergency kits, ensuring that rural clinics can handle a wide range of health needs. To make this impact sustainable, FOHSEN also trains local health workers to use and maintain this equipment, creating a self-reliant, resilient health system.

We’re Guided by Three Strategic Priorities

Ultrasound & Biomedical Equipment Access

At FOHSEN, we focus on equipping rural health facilities with essential biomedical tools—starting with ultrasound machines to strengthen maternal and antenatal care. Through our clinic renovation efforts, we’ve introduced ultrasound technology in under-resourced areas, enabling early detection of complications and timely referrals.

Improving Quality and Safety through Training

At FOHSEN, we don’t just provide equipment—we train clinic staff on how to use it effectively and safely. Through hands-on coaching, we strengthen providers’ skills in operating biomedical tools like ultrasound machines, while reinforcing key standards in patient care.

Our training emphasizes a culture of accountability: encouraging patients to voice concerns, supporting staff in reporting incidents, and using feedback loops to continuously improve service delivery. By combining equipment with training, we help clinics deliver high-quality, safe, and respectful care to every patient.

Health Post Renovations

As part of our long-term commitment to strengthening rural health systems, FOHSEN is renovating 20 health posts across Senegal over the next 10 years. These facilities—often the first and only point of care for remote communities—play a vital role in delivering essential services like maternal care, immunizations, and disease prevention.

By upgrading infrastructure, installing critical biomedical equipment, and training local health workers, we aim to elevate the standard of care and ensure that every community has access to safe, reliable, and dignified health services—no matter where they live.

The Nganda Maternity: A Closer Look

The Nganda Maternity Clinic is the first of its kind in this region—strategically placed to serve more than 100,000 people across 12 rural villages. The facility is a model of community-driven, evidence-based healthcare infrastructure. The clinic enhances the capacity of CHWs, offers safe birthing options, emergency services and brings maternal and pediatric care under one welcoming roof.

Project Introduction

The Nganda Maternity Clinic represents a critical step toward improving maternal and newborn care in Kaffrine. Designed to provide prenatal consultations, safe deliveries, postpartum support, and neonatal care, this facility will significantly reduce the need for long, risky journeys to distant hospitals. However, building the clinic is just the beginning. The real challenge lies in equipping it with the right medical tools, ensuring consistent power and water supply, and training local health workers to deliver quality care. This means investing in ongoing maintenance, digital health tools like KërSanté for real-time data tracking, and community education to make sure every mother and newborn has the best possible start.

Project Information

At FOHSEN, we center the community in everything we do. Alongside our expert-led steering committee, we’ve created a community-based sub-committee to ensure local voices shape decisions—keeping our work grounded in the real needs and aspirations of the people we serve. This approach guided the initiation of the Nganda Clinic, which will offer prenatal consultations, deliveries, postpartum care, vaccinations, family planning, and malnutrition screening & treatment—all designed with and for the community it serves.
